PSI Dual Range Tensiometer
PSI has developed a new tensiometer assembly for mounting into one or both sides of a cold rolling mill. Each tensiometer is of welded steel construction. A rigid upper frame supports a deflector roll and a roll wiper assembly. It attaches to the lower fixed frame by means of a steel pivot shaft running on low friction Garlock DU bearings. The end frames and center bar are machined to accept three hardened steel thrust buttons, which are supported by stacks of Belville washers. While not a total solution to damage from an overload, the Belville stacks help to protect the load cell from minor overloads and absorb shock, which may result from malfunctions or mill wrecks.
The lower frame has a machined pad upon which are mounted two quick release load cell mounting plates. The plates will be designed to accept Sensotech model 73 fatigue rated load cells. These cells are provided without built in amplifiers due to space constraints.
The center (Low Range) load cell is mounted on a custom manufactured hydraulic plunger with a stroke of 1/8 inch and bore of 2-1/2inches. The plunger is single acting with a spring return and operates from mill auxiliary hydraulic pressure. The fixed, outer cells have a rating of approximately 2000 lbs. The low range cell has a rating of approximately 1000 lbs. Error due to the changing wrap angle as the coil builds up will be minimized by designing for the existing geometry.
When the hydraulic plunger is activated, the deflector roll is elevated by 1/16 inch and the low range cell contacts its respective thrust button. The outer high range cells are no longer in contact with thrust buttons, and are removed from the force measuring system. In this condition, low range is enabled. When the plunger is deactivated, the low range cell no longer makes contact and the high range cells do. In this condition high measuring range is enabled. A limit switch is provided to determine when the low range is engaged.
A roll wiper is designed using a felt rectangle. This helps remove coolant and debris from the deflector roll that might cause marking of the material. It is spring loaded and easily changed by the operator.
Hydraulic valve stacks are included. The valves are single-solenoid, spring return with a pilot check valve, which prevents the low range cylinders from collapsing if hydraulic pressure is lost. The low range actuation plunger will have a gravity drain port to direct any leakage away from the load cells.This compact assembly is available in several different sizes depending upon the application.
